In 1983, Grace Newman founded The Highlands Inn, with the dream of creating an Inn exclusively for lesbians. Since that time, the Inn has operated continuously as a popular lesbian vacation destination. Since 1985 The Highlands Inn has hosted hundreds of commitment ceremonies, civil unions, and legal marriages. Lesbians from around the country, and even around the world, have gathered in this special oasis, with their partners, wives, children, and friends, old and new.
We began visiting The Highlands Inn in 1992, and came to treasure the connection and beauty that was like no other place we had ever experienced. When Grace decided to retire in 2012, we were honored and excited to purchase The Inn, so that we could continue the rich and valuable tradition of lesbian space.
The world is a very different place than it was in 1983. Thankfully, lesbians and our families experience greater freedom and comfort in where we can choose to relax, vacation, convene, and marry. As the years pass, we notice that many venues for lesbians have closed, or become “gay friendly”.
We feel that lesbian space continues to be valuable, and necessary. Our plan is to continue to create a space where lesbians can feel not only accepted, but also embraced and celebrated. We hope to continue Grace’s original mission at The Highlands Inn, and provide a safe and joyous place for lesbians to gather, for many years to come.
We hope to see you soon!
